Centenary is a 65″ narrowboat especially run with the object of providing a unique self steer waterway experience for the young and underprivileged as cost far below commercial rates. The boat operates on the beautiful southern Stratford canal and adjoining waterways and can carry a total of 12 people. Originally donated by the staff of M&S, the craft is now operated as a charity by the Stratford upon Avon Narrowboat Trust of which Dusty is chairman. For details of hiring, please follow this link.
The Stratford upon Avon Canal Society was one of the initial motivators in the reopening of the Stratford Canal back in 1964. While the canal was under National Trust administration the society held working parties which included hedge trimming, lock cleaning and piling. Dusty has done two stints as chairman of the society. The society has an interesting programme of monthly meetings throughout the winter, outings and waterway activities. To find out more, see the society website.
The Guild of Waterway Artists was formed as a group interested in the commercial painting of rivers, canals and other wetlands who wished to accredit their work and to work together to widen the commercial opportunities to promote their art. It is a members exhibit regularly at waterway events and venues.
The SAA is the most influential and far reaching society of its kind anywhere in the world… with an ever growing ‘family’ of enthusiastic and eager artists, it’s the largest art society… and the friendliest! The SAA believes in encouraging everyone, from complete novices and hesitant beginners to the legions of leisure painters and beyond.
Streethay Wharf is where Dusty’s hire boat is located and deserves a link on this web site. A real old fashioned boatyard which can supply everything from chandlery to engine servicing and even a brand new boat.
